In furtherance of the CERN-UNESCO School for Digital Libraries project, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in collaboration with the Prempeh II Library, KNUST has held the fourth training school with a focus on building a “digital library of the future.”

The school was held at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in November and brought together University Librarians and their IT specialists from Ghana, Uganda, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Malawi, the Seychelles and South Africa.

The purpose of the school was to deepen participants’ understanding of digital libraries, expose them to new trends in scientific publishing and emphasize a set of principles related to open science, such as open access, information sharing and research data management. The overall aim is to increase the impact and visibility of African researchers’ work on the Internet.

Presenters covered topics such as operation of digital libraries, an overview of open software solutions for operation of digital libraries, web technologies and APIs, operation of institutional repositories, open access principles, cataloging formats, persistent identifier systems, available information resources, and discussions on the opportunities for developing countries.
